Learning in Reception

In Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum across seven areas of learning:

  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design


What does learning look like?

Children learn through a balance of carefully planned play, continuous provision and adult-led teaching. Our environment encourages children to explore, investigate, talk, create and develop independence.

We believe strongly in the benefits of continuous provision, and this approach continues into Key Stage 1 at Stockham, supporting a smooth transition as children become increasingly confident and independent learners.

Phonics and Reading

We teach phonics and early reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Children have daily phonics teaching alongside regular opportunities to enjoy stories, rhymes and high-quality books. Developing both confident readers and a love of reading is at the heart of our approach.

Maths

We use Mastering Number to give children strong foundations in mathematics. Through practical experiences, games and mathematical talk, children develop a deep understanding of number, patterns and relationships.

Assessment

Assessment happens naturally as teachers work and play alongside children. Children complete the statutory Reception Baseline Assessment at the beginning of the year and the EYFS Profile at the end of Reception.

Above all, we get to know each child as an individual, understanding where they are and what they need to learn next.
